Waipio Valley

Waipio Valley : The Big Island version of the Valley of the Kings, Waipi'o has long maintained a special place in the hearts of locals. Steeped in legend, this deep, narrow valley stretches some five-plus miles, flanked on either side by towering rock walls. The valley floor is a lush tapestry of tropical flora, with guava, red banana, and taro hiding a multitude of natural treasures, like tranquil freshwater streams and waterfalls.

World Botanical Garden

World Botanical Garden : Sprawled across 300 acres of a former sugarcane plantation, World Botanical Gardens currently boasts more than 5,000 species of plants (many of them rare and endangered) the eventual goal is 30,000 species.

Volcano Art Center

Volcano Art Center : Founded in 1974, V.A.C. is dedicated to preserving and promoting worldwide awareness of the Hawaiian Islands' rich artistic history. The center hosts a variety of monthly exhibits and art sales that showcase paintings, wood sculptures, baskets, jewelry, and Polynesian-influenced masks.

Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site

Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site : Constructed in the late 18th century, this coastal temple was intended as an offering to the war god Kukai'ilimoku from King Kamehameha the Great. The entire island community took part in the building process, as recorded by British sailor John Young. Kamehameha subsequently established a monarchy that lasted 83 years and that united the Hawaiian Islands.

Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park

Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park : In times of yore, those in trouble women, thieves, and escaped prisoners trying to evade capture could find safe haven within the walls of this sacred burial ground, wherein lie the remains of Keawe, forefather of the legendary King Kamehameha I. Furthermore, priests who maintained the grounds would absolve offenders of any wrongdoing, allowing them to leave free of reprisal.

Punaluu Beach

Punaluu Beach : Wedged between the Kau Desert and Ka Lae (the South Cape), this exquisite black sand beach is one of the Big Island's most beautiful Freshwater springs which bubble up from the cove's floor chill the water somewhat, making it all the more refreshing during summer months. An interesting trivia tidbit: local legend has it that the northern and southern tips of the cove were once the sites of sacrificial stones.
