Desert in Bloom

Borrego Springs, CA: Photo Blog

Borrego Springs is located in the heart of Anza-Borrego desert state park in California. It combines the wilderness of the old west. With over 600,000 acres, it is the largest contiguous state park in the United States.

The state park draws over 2 million visitors annually to see the amazing desert flora and fauna and to behold the expansive mountain views. Attractions here include over five hundred miles of dirt roads and miles of hiking trails providing the visitor with an opportunity to escape to the beauty of the desert.

The park is named after Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza and the Spanish name Borrego, for the bighorn sheep that are icons for this area. An amazing spread of wildflowers here during the spring season makes it look like a paradise on earth.  The drive to the park is spectacular and oftentimes windy roads through the mountains.

The word ‘desert’ conjures up images of a barren spread of wilderness as far as the eye can see with nothing but dry vegetation and rocks. But we were pleasantly surprised and simply ecstatic to see that there were miles and miles of wildflowers in full bloom, during spring.

It was a sight to behold and gave us an impression of a piece of paradise on earth. The flowers were unbelievably beautiful and exotic. In addition to the desert cacti, the Ocotillos and the Palm trees the desert flowers in all colors left us wondering if it was for real.

The Desert has its fair share of fauna too. The fox, mountain cats, the rattle snakes, scorpions, red ants, Iguana, lizzards etc...

Miles & miles of wild flower fields

Needless to say the family went crazy with sheer delight. I do not know the name of all these flowers but hey ‘what’s in a name’…The sight was spectacular and we tucked it away in the mind’s eye.
