Phaung Daw U Festival - http://www.samsays.com
We were there for the annual Phaung Daw u Festival. This is a 20-day festival, during which time 4 of 5 gold buddhas are taken to each of the 4 cities around the lake, for the faithful to worship. They of course apply gold leaf to the small statues, so with all the extra gold over the years you can't tell their original shapes. It was certainly a festive occasion, and this was one of 20 boats of leg-rolling fisherman who accompanied the boat with the buddhas. There is also an interesting story about the buddhas - A few years ago the boat containing the buddhas capsized in heavy seas and divers could only recover four of the five. However when they returned them to the temple, the fifth was already there, covered in seaweed. Since then, only four are taken around the lake - the fifth is never moved. Inle Lake
