Recently a civilization as old as 2000 BC is discovered that existed besides Ayad [ Ahed ] river [ which is a seasonal river today] that flows through Udaipur city. Not much is known about these people as the  excavations are not elaborate. Some figurines and artifacts surely resemble those of Harappa.

This structure is said to be a water filtering facility.

         Excavaton that is incomplete.

            Another view of the excavations.

           Copper bowl of ancient times.

Weapons and ornaments of copper / bronze produced by the people of Ahed.

Statue of a Jain deity / tirthankar.

                Statue of standing Parvati.

                   Statue of Nag - Nagini.

The people of Ahed civilization produced ceramics [ pottery , beads, etc ], toys [ figurines of short horned bulls, carts etc ] and copper / bronze items [ weapons, ornaments, etc ] that are similar to Harappans. Harappan cities in the present day India are in western Rajasthan [ Marwad ] and adjoining areas in Gujarat. 2000 BC is a time when Harappan culture was facing decline. Have Marwadis migrated to Mewad ?

It is important to note that Rajpura- Dariba lead –zinc deposit [ near Udaipur ], has pockets of copper ore. In the village Padar-ki-pal on the route from Udaipur to Ahmadabad there is a copper mine which was worked in the ancient times. Also Ambajee copper-lead-zinc deposit in Gujarat on the boarders of Rajasthan has rich pockets of copper. These sources of copper ore might have been the raw material to the people of Ahed. The possibility of Ahed [ or for that matter Mewad ] technology being used by Harappans can't be ruled out at this point of time particularly in view of

ancient zinc smelting technology of Zawar. The technique used to extract zinc metal at Zawar in the ancient times is very much similar to the present day Imperial Smelting Process!

One thing that appears clear is that metallurgists moved either from Marwad to Mewad or the other way ie Mewad to Marwad. Who are those people. Obviously those are the people who were producing metal items like ploughs, weapons, ornaments and other such items. We can see that Gadariya Lohars are some of the people who are in the production of metal items. Loha means metal or Iron. There are other communities also who are engaged in metal working. But it is Gadariya Lohars of Mewad who wear bangles in the style of Marwadis ,a style that might have been inherited from the Harappans. Also Gadariya Lohars are a warrior community who migrated to as far as Andhra Pradesh where they are known as Lambadis.

At Ahed excavation site statues of the Gods of both Hindu and Jain religion are found. Of particular importance is the statue of Parvati a deity of importance to Dravidians. Also the Nag- Nagini statue indicates the presence of Naga people around Ahed those days.

May notice the image of fish on the top of the figure which probably is the symbol of Bhil Meena tribe.
