This summer, we took a 5 day vacation to Mount Abu,Rajasthan. I decided to choose this as our holiday destination mainly because it does not involve too much of travel & the weather out there was pleasant and would beat the Mumbai heat!!!!
There aremany ways to reach Mount Abu................
1)An adventurous group can cover the entire journey by road! Drive down all the way to Ahmedabad or Udaipur from Mumbai (which would probably take more than a day and a half) and from there Mount Abu is another 4 hours drive. This would obviously be a tiring journey if you have elderly people along.
2) The second option is to take a flight to either Ahmedabad or Udaipur (flight journey takes about 45mins to an hour) and then hire a vehicle from the airport & drive down to Mount Abu (4 hours drive). (THIS IS THE OPTION WE SELECTED......TOOK A FLIGHT TO AHMEDABAD & DROVE DOWN TO MOUNT ABU IN A RENTED CAR "INNOVA")
3) The third option is to take a train to Ahmedabad and then drive down to Mount Abu or even take a train further to Mount Abu. This is for people who do not wish to spend on the airfare.
Ok,now to tell you more about my experience of the journey! The flight from Mumbai to Ahmedabad was early morning at 5:40am Jet Airways. (the next option was an afternoon flight).......the flight jourrney was completed in an hour's time. At Ahmedabad aiport we were able to easily rent out a car for our 5 day stay at Mount Abu........the car & driver would stay with us and bring us back to Ahmedabad for our return flight to Mumbai after 5 days. The total cost for the rented car for 5 days was approx 12K + taxes(which we would have to pay as toll etc on the way).
The road journey from Ahmedabad to Mount Abu was a very comfortable one coz of the car & driver being good. The car was in a fantastic condition, powerful A/C,comfortable interiors......the scenic view after leaving the main city of Ahmedabad was really awesome.....amazing hilly views.....greenery.....breath taking! It was quie hot outside but ofcourse we didnt feel the same inside ;)
Hotels at Mount Abu
There are many hotels at Mount Abu catering to differrent classes of society. We booked for 4 nights at Palace Hotel (Bikaner House),which is a 3 star hotel (Actually a old palace converted into hotel). Below is a pic of the hotel lobby entrance........
For the last night we booked at a 5 star Hotel Hillock. There are many other hotels which we would have booked at but most of them were full as it was the tourist season and probably the last2 weeks before the rains hamper the business at this hill station!
Places of Interest at Mount Abu
1) Nakki Lake (this is where we spent most of our time. One can go boating in different kinds of pedal boats, row boats, shikara's for different durations:15mins, 1/2 hour, 1 hour) It's a beautiful lake! You can see some pictures of the same below. One can also get their photos clicked by the professional photographers in the boats or get dressed in the typical Rajasthani outfits and then get pics clicked....charge is just Rs.20/- per photo and they give you the same within half hour)
2) Sunset Point & Honeymoon Point (you can get the breath taking sunset view from this point......and also get photographs clicked with the sun setting behind you....a perfect place for newly weds or people who are romantically inclined. The walk towards sunset point from the main car park area is about 1km and it is upwards on a steep path.....there is an option that one takes a "baba gadi - you sit in the carriage & get pushed by local people who charge you Rs.30/- for taking you to sunset point" this is highly recommended for elderly people.
3) Delwara Jain Temples (the name suggests everything about the place.......the architecture is really worth seeing)
4) Gurushikhar (this is one of the highest peaks in India. One has to climb around 500 steps towards the peak until one reaches a temple.....after taking darshan at the temple, one has to climb another 50 steps towards the main Gurushikhar......at the peak there is a small Ganesh temple & a bell which can be rung.....pics given below)
5) Gau Mukh (to reach this place one has to go down through a jungle route.....about 750 steps.....there is a Cow's Mouth made of marble stone through which holy water flows since decades now and this water when tasted is sweet and supposed to be pure and can take away all your ailments. There is also a temple which has a devi murti & shivling) The most difficult part of visiting this place is climbing back the 750 steps! Ensure that you are fit n fine to take this journey and have eaten properly....carry water along.....dont carry bags/valuables along as there are lot of monkeys en route and may snatch the bags.
6) Brahmakumari Peace Park
Now enjoy the pics of this place in the photos section on my page and do plan to visit this beautiful place once in your life........its more of a romantic place.....and recommended to visit with your loved one.......also if visiting with family for holiday reasons.....you won't need more than 2 days!
