Shillong (Meghalaya)

Shillong is called easts Scotland. This is now capital of Meghalaya state of India. Once upon a time when Shillong was capital of seven North Eastern states. This was also known as Nefa provinces.

Nefa was divided in seven states in the year 1972. Geographically, Meghalaya is divided in seven districts. Three types of scheduled tribes are found here. These are Khasi, Garo and Jayentia. There are east, west and south hills near Tura.

The residents of Shillong speak their own local language and English. There is a great effect of Christian religion on there lives. Shillong is famous tourist place because of its residents, flowers and plants. There are good hotels, sporting facilities, fishing and walking on foot on the hills and skying facilities are also available to tourist.

The weather of Shillong remains pleasant in almost throughout the year. The maximum temperature of Shillong during April and May remains 28 degree Celsius and minimum 28 degree. The lowest temperature that is i.e. 2 degree remains during December.

The residents of this city have become followers of Christian religion. They calibrate Christmas with great joy and happiness over scheduled tribe festival called Shedsukmianseel celebrated in the month of April in Bieking ground Shillong. This is celebrated during three days. Another festival is called Nagcremdance which is a most important festival of Khasi scheduled tribe. This festival is celebrated during five days. This festival is celebrated at a place which is 15 km from Shillong. In spite of this Meghalaya tourism also organizes Shillong autumn festival in November for the tourists.

The flight of Alliance Air departs from Kolkata to Shillong six days in a week and reaches UmriAirport which 35 km from Shillong. The tourists can reach GuwahatiAirport from different parts of India. The distance of Shillong is 100 km from Guwahati.

People desirous of visiting Shillong can also reach Guwahati by Train from different parts of the country. Bus, Taxi and Helicopter services are also available from Guwahati to Shillong. To visit Shillong and its nearby places taxi and package tours are also available for the tourist.

There are good hotels located in Police Bazaar viz Hariom Hotel and other budget hotels are situated in the other parts of Shillong city. Fooding and lodging are available to tourist who visits Shillong. In spit of these hotels where budget accommodation is available there are private hotels and restaurant where fooding facilities are available to every types of tourist.

There are so many places worth visiting in the Shillong city and other nearby places.

Tourist visiting Shillong must see StateMuseum. Sweet fall is situated at a distance of 8 km from Shillong. According to its name Shillong peak is situated at a distance of 10 km from Shillong. This place is a tourists place.

There is a very beautiful lake in Shillong which is known as WardsLake. This is situated in the middle of the city. There is a Botanical Garden connected with this lake.

Lady Haidri Park is also situated in the Shillong city. There is a mini Zoo for children. Along with there is a beautiful fountain and swimming pool. There is also restaurant where so many programs are organized for tourist in evening.

Polo ground is also situated in Shillong city which is famous for its specialty. Shillong Golf Course is also situated in Shillong city.

Cherapoonji and Elephenta fall is situated at a distance of 56 km from Shillong. This is famous for maximum rain in the country. There are other so many places where Indian and foreign tourist visit every year.

The best time to visit Shillong is from March to June and October to December.
